Ooo I’ll take a look in to that as my grandma really likes lemon curd. Any recipe suggestions?

That’s a good idea, thank you 😊

How about some home made pickled veggies? Piccalilli and beetroot and sandwich pickle always go down well with folks their age. Perhaps make some decorated jars of cookies ( make the base crumble mix so all they need to add is the wet ingredients) you can find the ingredients list on All recipes for many different cookie types. Maybe make some home made jams or marmalade too and add a photo of a family member on each jar..

Fudge is a great idea as you can make it a pop less crumbly and it will travel well!
Shortbread is good, make sure it’s sealed in an airtight bag and it should keep okay to get it there and get eaten! Or maybe ginger bread?
I rum and raisin flapjack would be pretty tasty too! Preserves would keep well (as unless they have a massive sweet tooth too many sweet snacks might not get eaten in time!) though check royal mails restrictions on liquidy stuff (they have some pretty funny restrictions, so a jar of pickles for instance may not be permissible due to the vinegar)

So I’ve decided to do them a box of treats when I can finally see them. Unfortunately I live about 3 hours away from them so can’t just pop it on their doorstep or anything.
Anyway, I was wondering if anybody had any ideas of things I could make or put in there? I’m not an amazing baker but not awful so nothing too complicated ideally I am going to try making a gin and tonic cake today (grandad’s favourite drink). If it is nice, I will make either cupcake or mini loaf versions to go in there. Alternatively, I will do the same with lemon drizzle cake. I’m thinking some sort of biscuit too and maybe those Oreo and cream cheese truffles (or a different version of these if anyone has any ideas?). Any other ideas that are fairly quick and easy? Thanks
I know how you feel my Husband will be 70 next week no family celebration we will all connect up on Zoom .
Could you not post them the treats if you pack them carefully. When they receive the parcel could freeze some of the cakes so don’t have to eat all in one go , lemon drizzle cake freezes well I have been making traybake ones and cutting up and freezing just getting 2 slices out every day , did the same last week with rock cakes froze some of them .

I’d never heard of a tea loaf but I googled and it looks good!

I like the idea of photos of family on the jars! I’ll definitely look in to that, thank you!

Yeah I really like the idea of fudge (so I can eat some too ) so thank you to you and everyone else that suggested it! I’ve never thought about Royal Mail restrictions when I’ve posted stuff before but it’s something I’ll think about in the future. I won’t be posting this though thankfully, I’ll be giving it to them on my next visit as I can do the baking the day before or morning that I see them (I stay with another family member) so it’ll be as fresh as possible

Yes we will be doing a zoom family celebration too, it’s not the same but still enjoyable
I thought about posting it but they’ll be receiving so much cake from nearby family members and friends that doing it for them at a later date gives them something to look forward to and sort of extends their birthdays for a while, as they’re still big kids at heart

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that has given me suggestions, not sure if I managed to reply directly to every message. There’s lots of great ideas and I’m looking forward to researching and testing some recipes (and even to doing a bit of maths to only make small amounts of each recipe )

It's a lovely idea.

My auntie is in a nursing home at the moment, locked down since early March.

We sent her a 'Red Cross' parcel - she loved it, packed full with nice treats. The only thing she was disappointed with was the lack of an escape map!
