I'm sorry to hear that you had an unpleasant experience on holiday but glad that nothing was taken. The alarm must have scared them off.

Don't let this put you off. The best thing to do is always book direct. Choose the villa you want, that way you can ask the owner what security measures they have in place.

Some will have the works. For example we have a good alarm system, safe, double bolt lock on the pool sliding door and there are CCTV cameras on all entrances to the community. A lot of villas will have the same features but you will only be able to ensure this if you book it yourself and not AOA. (as you will never know what security you are going to get in an AOA)

Gated communities and non gated communities can be as safe as each other as long as the houses themselves are secure

This doesn't surprise me unfortunately. As is probably the case with most of the world at the moment, many law enforcement agencies in Central Florida are overstretched which affects the service the public receives.

Sorry to hear about what happened. We are planning to go in 2015, and stay in the world. Not made our mind up about hotels yet. I would love boardwalk (but my bank manager wouldn't!) so are debating SSR,OKW,POR etc at the moment so will be useful to see how your thread goes.

So sorry to hear you had a break in,it must have been awful. I really don't think it makes any difference whether it's a dibb villa, gated, maned or not, it's no different to this country sadly it's just your bad luck. We've stayed in villas 5 times now in all different areas and communities and, touch wood, never had a problem. Been burgled at home though-not a nice experience.
