use year question

Apologies if this is a silly question (and it probably is lol)

We are looking at investing in DVC - we are hoping to go mainly in September - can anyone explain how the 'use year' would apply to us? (we get the use year as in banking and borrowing points its more when they would be available to use and getting the right resort)

Is there an ideal use year month for us to look at on a contract if we were aiming to go in September?

It doesn’t really matter except for your first year. When it becomes a big deal is if you have to cancel at short notice so people often suggest a use year just before your usual travel date so if you cancelled you’d have a full year to reuse the points.

In terms of when they are available to use. You need to have the points available on check in day. So if you had July use year. You could book in October 2019 for Sept 2020 as your points would come live July 2020 which is before your check in date.

We have a Jun UY for Sept/Oct stays, the only time that it has become an issue is when we have thought about a May holiday but that could happen with any holiday before your UY. General advice is at least 4 months before your usual stay, to allow for "options" if you need to cancel for any reason.

Hello! Here is a little piece of information we share on our FAQ page on our Resales DVC website. We have a great article on use year.

If you need to vacation in the same month every year, you should really consider purchasing an ownership where the Use Year precedes the vacation time by no more than 9 months. Here’s why: Disney requires owners to bank any un-used points within 8 months from the start of their Use Year. For example, April Use Year owners must bank points by November 30th. If you have a December reservation and needed to cancel at the last minute (31 days prior) you would still be within your banking deadline and could bank points into the next Use Year.
