Unknown charges when collecting Hire Car?

Hi
When I went through Orlando last time I went straight to the desk in the garage.
After handing over the various documents I got an agreement back that had some charges.
I had prepaid which included tank of fuel.
These charges were for fuel for me to bring back empty and leave them to fill it up.
There were other taxes for about $15 that had no description.

I got them to remove the fuel charge as I would return it full and it would have been nice if they had checked if I wanted to do this first before charging me for their fuel.
This meant there were still tax charges on the agreement.
I asked them to tell me what they were for.
The lady there had no idea what they were for and would not remove them, they could not tell me what I paying this tax for.

I then went to the car and found the warning light for do not drive the car( a yellow tap luminated) would not go out.

Back to the desk and I was given a different car which was fine.

I was still annoyed at having to pay a tax that had no description as to what it was and that the rental desk did not know either.

Anyone know what it might have been?

Why is it that whenever I prepay for a hire car there is always some kind of charge to pay still?

It’s a mystery to me.

I ask all this because I am shortly going to rent a car from Avis in Miami.
I am tempted this time though to bring car back without refuelling to take the extra stress out of trying to find and fuel the car at last minute on return.
I was also going to use Toll pass supplied with car.

Any other charges I might get from Avis miami?

The car is prepaid through BA

Thanks

The charges left on your invoice after they had taken the fuel off was probably the tax and the airport fee on the said fuel. It should have dropped off automatically.
I wouldn't have taken the car unles it was showing $0.

As an aside in 42 years of renting in the States and at least 100+ rentals I have never had charges on the invoice that I didn't expect.

Providing the vehicle is booked through a UK broker there should be no taxes to pay, unless you agree to any extras. As you had the fuel removed, the taxes should have disappeared as well. Who was the rental company?

Same with booking Avis through BA. There should be nothing to pay locally, however you'll more than likely use the automated tolling system offer by Avis as there are a lot of cashless toll roads around Miami and en-route to Orlando, if thats your plan. You'll be charged the admin fee of $19.75 plus whatever tolls you go through.

I'm with you Tom. Though not been hiring as long as you have - only since 1991 - have not had any invoice charges that I wasn't expecting.
