Hawaii - the big island

Hi Dibbers,

We are planning a trip to The Big Island in Hawaii during Easter next year for around 8-10 days (combining it with a trip to LA) and wondered if anybody has any tips on where to stay that has the calmest beaches for snorkelling please?

And any other tips in general would be appreciated as we’re completely new to that part of the world.

Thanks in advance xxx

I stayed at the Mauna Kea Beach hotel on the big island and it was absolutely stunning. It was a good few years ago so I'm hesitant to offer any advice as I'm sure it's changed a lot.

Fly into Kona rather than Hilo for the best beaches which are all found on the west of the island (I recommend taking side trips to the Hilo area however).

There is loads of different types of accommodation - you’ll pay a massive premium for something beach front.

We stayed in a stunning Airbnb (two stories, bbq, balcony, patio, massive kitchen/ diner, two beds and two baths) at Mauna Lanai for £180/night. We found nothing much cheaper than that. You could find somewhere cheaper in Kona itself but I didn’t like it as much there.

There is so much to see and do on Big Island, it’s a wonderfully strange place.

Fab, thank you, i will have a look at that. Can I asked who you booked with please?
The island looks amazing so I’m hoping it will keep my 17 and 12 year olds happy 😀

This was 1998 so I honestly can't remember (& no email record, back then it was all paper!), sorry. Karen is far more up to date than me when it comes to Hawaii

Hi. We flew into Kona and rented a shore front property...it was beyond perfect and probably my favourite ever trip. No lies, we had turtles sunbathing just outside.

I can list all the amazing places to visit on the island if you need it.

There is a beach South of Kona near the place we rented and its a small man made harbour built by the locals hundreds of years ago. You cannot see the water for fish. While there we saw turtles and a seal even came by to say hello. The lifeguards asked everyone to give him room.

It's stunning there.

The volcano national park is a bit of a drive from Kona but well worth it. You see stunning scenery and pass through the most southerly town in the USA. They sell great coffee

Its very easy, its pretty much the only road that leads around the island.

That sounds absolutely perfect, and yes please I would love a list of the places to visit please.
I don’t suppose you have a link to the property you rented do you, or could point me in the right direction could you please? Any information would be gratefully received 👍😁

I cannot find the exact one right now, it might not still rent out but this is in the same complex about doors away. We used VRBO to book it. The one we rented was on the end. The sun sets right out in front of you.

vrbo/720671

Edited. I just have to pop out but will post some photos and list some places to visit while there.
