Kitchen question
We are planning to replace our ageing kitchen and after several plans we have a dilemma.
Our kitchen has a large window at one end (north west facing) and one smaller window at the other end on the side wall (not in photo but pretty much where the camera was when photo was taken), The kitchen is not huge - the attached photo will give you an idea... The best layout for us means that we have to sacrifice the smaller window and keep the large one. This will mean that we can have a large run of floor to ceiling units housing the oven (at eye level), and the American fridge freezer and then on the other side (side where fridge is now) a 5 zone induction hob and no wall cupboards, so lots of worktop and open space - this should also rebalance the room as the window (for some reason) is not central. I am worried that we may regret sacrificing the light, but also worried that if we don’t, we really won’t gain any additional space and benefit... We plan on having a white or cream gloss kitchen, with white granite tops and a light wood floor, so we should be reflecting and bouncing as much light as possible... So, would you sacrifice a window, for the right layout? |

Is your house a bungalow? If so have you thought about a light tunnel?
I personally think the window you have is fine in terms of the size of the room and wouldn’t worry about losing the smaller window, particularly if you’re putting in lighter units. |

Why not cover up the window with a black out blind for a few days - see how the kitchen feels without light from that window. Does it make a difference?

You could also get done under lights for you new cupboards. I have these as my kitchen is dark and put them on some days if needed. I have daylight lamps so they look better IMO

Yep, we have done that, and yes it does make a big difference... which is why I wonder if other people have had this dilemma 😀
But, obviously the thing that I can’t tell is just how much difference the light units, floor, countertop etc will make to minimise that difference... |
