Car hire/insurance

Hi all

Just joined back up to the dibb after being away for 8 long years, but we now have a Florida holiday to look forward to in July

My first question to you very helpful people on the dibb is about car insurance. We have booked a car through Discount Florida car hire (Alamo) which includes there top up insurance. After reading a few posts on here I have been on Brit Alamo and there price is coming out over £100 cheaper. Brit Alamo states "Tire Battery Fee .02 Day" is included is this covering the same things as the extra insurance on discount Florida car hire or is there insurance covering much more? Who do I book with?

Hi,
No, the top up insurance covers punctures, windscreen, lost / locked in car keys. You can get the extra insurance through Alamo for $5 a day.

The Tire Battery Fee is just a local tax (and is included on both Brits and my bookings).

Hi Andy

Thanks for that can you explain the difference between the following?

Your rental agreement will include the following protection products:

Damage Waiver (DW) - Excess will apply
Alamo provides Damage Waiver which reduces the costs associated with damage to and/or theft of the Enterprise vehicle subject to the terms and conditions of your rental agreement. Damage and theft responsibility is the full value of the vehicle. Damage Waiver may be mandatory and included in the quote.

You have the following optional protection products available for an additional charge:

Excess Protection (EP)
In the event of damage and or theft, an excess is applicable which varies depending on vehicle type. Excess protection will cover £1100 of damage, subject to terms and conditions of the rental agreement. The following excess amounts apply:

All Cars - £1200
Mini MPV's and MPV's - £1350
Premium vehicles, SUV's & 4x4's - £1600

Excess protection is an optional coverage that allows the renter to reduce the excess responsible by £1100 for £16.55 per day including VAT and Premium Location fees.

This can be added at our rental counters so please ask our rental agents for more information on arrival.

Then when you click on a car it states

Collision Damage Waiver (USA: No Excess)
Extended Liability Protection (EP) (USA/CA: up to $1 mil)
Customer Facility Chg 2.25 Per Day Per Day
Concession Fee 11.11%
Tire Battery Fee .02 Day
Florida Surcharge 2.00 Per Day Per Day
Vehicle License Fee
Sales Tax
Unlimited Mileage
1 Additional driver

So is there excess to pay or is there no excess?

No excess in the USA so in the event of collision / theft, you wouldn't pay anything. The terms on their site are very generic in order to cover other rental locations Alamo covers. For example in Canada you would be liable to pay an excess in the event of it being stolen or being involved in an accident.

The EP included is what we and most other companies call SLI (Supplemental Liability Insurance) and covers up to $1 million

The insurance that covers windscreen, tires and car keys is called something else with Alamo and I cant recall what it is at the moment.

Thanks for that Andy it's a lot clearer now.

Thanks for your input Mr Tom .

Do most people go for this extra insurance is it worth it for peace of mind?

What happens if say you don't take extra insurance and have a blow out? Do they still come and help you or are you stuck on the side of the road?

Hi. Most actually dont go for this extra cover. Probably we should!
Those who do use a UK Broker or a US firm as it's half the price, you pay for any issue and they reimburse you.

If you have a blow out then you have to change the wheel. If you call them out to do it you will be invoiced.
If the car breaks down that's their problem and they come out with a low loader and a replacement car for you.

We have cover which we have taken out with carhirexcess.co uk , it's about £28.00 a year , only taken this out as we also hire in Europe for a few trips of the year and saves us paying their ridiculous prices on extra insurance, but is also covers us in US as well.
