The Grand Tour...Travel Day
Our taxi arrived at 08.30, we had a great straightforward journey and arrived at Gatwick in plenty of time. The queue for Westjet bag drop off was horrifically long when we joined it however we were soon ushered to another queue and had our bags checked in. It was around this time we received a message from Expedia to say our flight was delayed… We weren’t overly bothered as we had been flight watching for the last couple of weeks and had noticed that every day there was a slight delay.
We soon made it to the No 1 lounge and found a lovely corner area with comfortable seats and proceeded to eat plenty! We were lucky to receive this lounge for free due to a price match through Holiday Extras best price guarantee, we would definitely go here again and would happily pay as we all really enjoyed it. We ate eggs benedict, bacon sandwiches, fish finger sandwiches, pastries, fruit, cereals, cakes and lots more. Alcohol was also inclusive (bubbles were extra) so we also had a few glasses, well it’ll be rude not too! The staff here were very attentive keeping the food topped up and tables clean. Nobody questioned us staying over the 3 hours due to the delay, it was actually quite nice to have a base out of the main terminal. We took it in turns to nip out to the shops, I had a prepaid Visa card given to me for my birthday so I was desperate to spend it! I found a new bikini in Fat Face and I used the rest on some Jo Malone perfume which I’ve always wanted it took me ages to decide on a scent though! I opted for Nutmeg and Ginger which not only smells lovely but it’s also what I call my kids so quite fitting DD bought some bits in Superdry and DH and DS bought aftershave. We also purchased food for our flight from Boots, we just went for the meal deal of sandwiches/pasta, crisps and a drink. Before long we were at our gate ready to board. We had pre-booked our seats so we knew we were sat together. We boarded quickly and were soon on the runway, we had about a two hour delay which was fine as we made up time in the sky. We soon set up our iPad’s and kindle in the holders in the seatbacks. During the flight we watched films we had previously uploaded, read books, played cards and some of us had a nap! It became apparent towards the end of our flight that the Westjet connect films were complimentary for us…never mind! The crew were fab, the plane was clean and comfortable and we were offered soft drinks and snacks four times throughout the flight. So far very impressed with Westjet. We landed in Vancouver with no problems, our bags were heading straight to San Francisco so we didn’t even need to sort that out! We had a lovely guy at immigration and when he discovered what DH does for work he was so lovely and gave him a trade coin. Ideally we wanted to eat at the A&W restaurant, DD is a massive fan of the root beer, she was very excited when we discovered it was at the airport however it wasn’t on the side we were… Not much we could do so we ended up in Burger King. It was okay, very expensive but quite tasty. We passed time by posing with a huge teddy bear moose! As we were on Canadian soil therefore we had technically visited Canada so surely that warrants a magnet ;-) Our flight to San Francisco was uneventful, we tried to get some shut eye as we had all been up for 24 hours by this point. Our bags arrived at the same time as us so this was a big thumbs up to Westjet. We had booked an airport hotel due to our arrival time, after a while we found the phone to call them on to arrange shuttle collection. We made our way to the pickup point which was outside and boy it was chilly! We were told that San Francisco was cold and they were right! Finally we arrived at our hotel, checked in and had a quick shower before bed. Relaxed and peaceful knowing our adventure was about to begin… *Tip of the day… Pack a phone charging lead and suitable plug in your hand luggage*

Great start. What time of year did you visit?
Ignore that - just gone back to your index and can see it was July/August, so the same time of year that we'll be visiting. Just how cold was San Francisco?

During the day it was mid to low 20's but as the sun set it dropped to mid teens. It's quite blowy which makes it chillier.
I would pack layers rather than bulky jumpers if you're travelling around... |

A good start, and good to read about a different airline from my point of view.

Amazing how San Francisco can be so cool in July and August and boiling in September / October!

Not a bad travel day, long though. We found SF freezing when we were there in July a few years ago. Not what we expected !
