The car hire companies are the ones who advertise the size of the luggage space.
the reason they do this is to make you feel the way you are and upgrade the car. If you go to the rental desk that is one of there upsells. Are those your bags, I see you have 4 large cases, no way are you going to fit all that in the car. You will need to upgrade to this huge over sized for your party and well over priced car. This is why you see so many people book SUV that way there sure they will manage. Are the size and luggage space correct NO Will you fit your luggage in all depends on your bag sizes and exact car you get. To be save and have no worries take an SUV peace of mind

I really wouldn't stress over this. We are 4 adults and have booked an intermediate car. We will fit what we can into the boot and anything else will go on our laps! It's not a long journey and is only to get to the villa and back to airport when we go home. We take medium sized cases so could fit 2 in back on laps or in middle, rucksacks by our feet, am sure we can fit 2 medium cases and one rucksack into boot. We had the same size car last time we went and the boot was huge... no problems at all.

My advice is how do you get to airport in UK.
This indicates what size you need a destination. Airport runs to and from will always for most of us be a squeeze. However after that as long as you pick a 2 4 7 8 seater you need you will be fine. There are taxi Uber etc work arounds if budgets are tight and next group up is a huge cost. Remember an SUV luggage capacity is floor to roof liner in a vertical way rather than horizontally in a booted saloon if this makes sense. Enjoy.

For 4 adults, I'd get a standard SUV. We had a Ford Edge last year and got our 2 massive suitcases, hand luggage suitcases and coats in the boot, with room to spare. I nearly bought a Ford Edge here as it was so good.

As have been said a few times in this thread, I also find that the luggage specs given by the rental companies are on the low side. It could well be because they're trying to up-sell you to a more expensive one, but it could also be that they try to play it a little safe - terms like 'small' and 'large' are somewhat vague, after all.
In addition to the Car Hire Pictures thread here on Dibb, I find that Google Image Search is a great tool for finding images of cars and their boot space as a way of researching this: Look up the fleet of the car rental company for a given class, then search images for the car make and model and year (current and/or previous year).

Who are you going with and have you joined their schemes before you arrive - e.g. Dollar Express or Avis Preferred etc. ? This is a quick way of avoiding the desks, but also lets you have a bit more flex on the car as you can see what is available and make your judgement then. Plus see what is in the upgrade line at the garage if you really think the short journey will be untenable.
We take holdalls rather than hard sided luggage and have the benefit that we can load-share across bags, (rather than one bag per person), but have never had a problem squeezing it in. We have had stuff in the back with us though on occasion. Fine for small bags on laps (or poss one larger bag in the middle) - but not sure I would want to do with large suitcases on laps - esp if doing a longer airport run from Sanford or Tampa. MCO wouldn't be so bad ! |
