Dar poeta in Trastevere is one of the best pizza places I have ever been, plus the house wine is excellent, check it out on trip advisor.
Also Alle fratte di Trastevere is a wonderful all round Italian. Neither rob you and seem to cater for locals! |

We stayed near St Peters Basilica in a private apartment, we didnt like the food. I think it was all overpriced and not cooked very well, we had lots of Gelato from lots of different shops. If we saw a crowd we thought the Gelato must be good. On the last day we ate at Piazza de Trevvie near the Trevvie fountain and had a lovely meal. Spaghetti, meatballs and I had pizza, Bruschetta for starters. There are lots of beggers scattered around and people selling selfie sticks which are a pain. Lots of Hustle and Bustle and sirens but I loved all that x

I completely agree with this. Many friends I know have had similar issues and I saw ridiculous expensive food on the menus display outside at tourists stops. You can get nice meals at these locations but they aren't the norm. Look for where the locals go, if they advertise an english menu outside or have people beckoning you in it's probably a no go. Stick to that and you'll fine reasonable and delicious food.
As far as gelato goes look for the artisanal suppliers, if it's piled high and decorated, move on, it's not proper gelato, full of unnatural flavourings and worst air. It's very typical to see this on the main tourist drags and it's not cheap either!
