Car hire rental August 2014

Just looking at this for 2nd half of August this year - usually we go at quieter times of the year and book the car fairly last minute but I'm amazed at the variations in price I'm seeing at the moment. Used Hertz last few trips, however their current prices are bonkers!

Alamo through Virgin Holidays and US Car Hire is about the cheapest I can see (looking at 7 seater van or SUV) but some places are literally double! I was thing of waiting see if there were any "end of quarter" deals towards the end of June but I'm starting to panic a bit.

Any regular August travellers got any advice, please?

We booked with alamo brits last week, they were by far the cheapest for us. We have booked a mid size SUV for 16 days, not sure of the cost as DH booked it but we did get free additional driver.

We're not doing anything dramatic - 2wks from 13th to 27th Aug, pick up at MCO.

7 seater minivan is coming out on Alamo Brits at £627, vs £400 with VH (VH has the advantage of 2hr return grace period which could be useful as we arrive on the eary flight and go back on the later one) and a little cheaper with US Car Hire.

A 7 seater SUV is just shy of £900 on Alamo Brits!

ETA: Standard Alamo (not Brits) pricing is £700 for van and £1000 for SUV. Double

Last 2 weeks in Aug, 7 seater, Hertz using AA discount code and top cash back came to £350. Almost Brits was similar, but get 2nd driver free with Aa code and we upgraded to Gold so should be quicker. Booked this before Xmas. I have found best deals this far ahead...but some say you get better deals closer in... I don't like that risk!
