The palace hotels chain are really nice and give you the extras that the others don't. Deffinately worth taking a look at.

Tulum ruins are lovely, but go early to avoid crowds (coach loads) and the heat.
Swimming with the turtles at Akumal Beach is fab. Use the Collectivos out on the main road, so easy and very cheap. We stayed at GBP Coba, but personally I didn't like it; too far from the beach. I'd stay at GBP Akumal if the price was right though.

Wow, lucky girl.
I know they're trying to stop tourists touching the turtles etc, but I fear it's not gonna work for some time; silly people that think it's ok to grab them.

GBP Akumal isn't in Akumal, it's about a 10min collectivo ride up the coast. The GBP hotels are all together and named after local areas, so a little confusing when talking about them.
Akumal does have a few hotels, but can't think what they're called off the top of my head.

The GBP hotels are approx 10 mins from Akumal (up the coast) and approx 20 mins from Tulum ruins, by collectivo.
I believe most of the hotels on that coast line are quite isolated from each other, unless you stay at one near/in Playa del Carmen or Tulum. GBP does at least have 'the Hacienda' that all the GBP hotels can use (near the main road); which has a couple of bars and some shops/market stalls.
