Thanks for all of your replies, some great ideas in there. He is starting to research big companies and apprenticeships that may possibly offer as a plan A, we keep saying to him that very few know what they want to do at his age, unfortunately his twin sister knows exactly what she wants to do and it's obviously made her choices so much easier. I'm a Charterd Valuation Sureveyor working for a utilities company. We are a big employer in the north west and take on both grads and apprentices each year.

This year for the first time my department is taking an apprentice (18+) who will follow a graduate apprentice scheme. So will achieve their degree over 5 years, plus a further 2 years to become Chartered. A absolutely wonderful opportunity. Getting paid, company will pay for the degree, get qualified and no debt at the end!

At 17 I wanted to be a teacher, at 18 the LAST thing I wanted was to be a teacher.
I became a mechanical design engineer, then Water Distribution engineer, then a Systems Engineering Manager. Funnily enough the job I ended up doing before I retired was Technical Training Manager for a large water utility in the North West.
So in a way I ended up being a TEACHER. 😂😂😂

I work in IT specialising in network and telecoms engineering, for an American company. I am the odd one out in a very male environment but I can hold my own and have done for a few years LOL

Occupations in our family:

Me - mental health nurse - many moons ago. Been working as an admin officer in Higher Education for the past 21 years.

DH - ex lab manager (Biochemistry); now working as an Early Years Practitioner in a private nursery and loves it - changed career at the age of 54!

DD 20 - at college studying catering and events management

It's taken DD 2 years to decide what she wanted to do - and even now she still has wobbles about what she's doing.
