Another thing you may need to consider, just in case she does manage to leave the house, is to complete a Herbert Protocol document. You can find them online, the family or carers fill it in and then should she go missing it can be collected by the police so that they have all necessary information in place to be able to start searching for her. It can save a lot of wasted time trying to gather this information from a relative when they are frantic over a missing loved one.

Karen, so sorry to hear your story which is unfortunately so familiar in many ways. All I can say is that my father-in-law suffered with Alzheimer’s and for us the final straw came when he physically through my mother-in-law out of the house. She had lived with his increasingly erratic behaviour for several years and the night walks, trying to find his old home from 50 years ago etc etc. I think it is really a question of how long FIL can cope before MIL has to go into a care home which from what you say is inevitable. Hope everything works out as well as it can for you.
