Renewing your passport has no effect as you simply update your details on the website. ESTA is irrelevant, however, you still need to have one.

Five years - you can go into your online account and change your passport number if it expires during this period. I believe renewal at the five year mark is a relatively simple process too.

I renewed mine earlier this year, as it was due to run out in May on my birthday. I did the renewal application in January, as we were over in March, thinking I would be there to get an interview. Due to the shut down it was not processed until I was home again, but they just renewed it for another 5 years without an interview. I had to get the police check done again and pay the $100.
My husbands is due for renewal next January, I did the renewal for him in July, but we do not have his conditional acceptance yet. Hopefully it will go through the same as mine or we can get the interview done when we are over next week.

If you change your name when renewing your passport to your married name, can you still update the GE on the website easily?
