Recommendations for tree stump killers
Has anyone used any of the solutions you can buy to get rid of tree stumps? We’ve cut down a couple of large trees and need to kill off the stumps. The reviews for the various products are hit and miss. Thank you.

We had the same issue.
We had the stump ground out in the end, as none of the chemicals seemed to work. |

check out your local tool hire shop, such as HSS. There is a machine called a tree stump grinder which is around the size of a lawn mower and has a blade like a chainsaw. You should be able to hire the machine for a day.

Some years ago one our neighbours drilled some holes into a tree stump and filled the holes with Harpic! It worked.

Bizarre though it sounds as it's a timber preservative but the old method was to drill holes, fill them with creosote and putty over them
Rotted nicely then. My neighbour dropped maybe 20 conifers and contracted a Guy to use a stump grinder. Worked very well but the poor Guy burned his machine out.

Thanks for your replies. I may have to try them one at a time until something works!

Please don’t use chemicals as it will kill bugs and insects , possibly birds too which may eat the insects or may be close by ..
This is damaging to which our already struggling eco system . Pouring chemicals into a already damaged planet just seems so needless and wrong on so many levels . There are tools you can hire to remove it or get a tree surgeon. Edited at 11:34 AM. |

Also if they are left long enough they will just rot down naturally.

A Dibber posted on here yesterday about a Strawberry Tree as a suggestion for somebody. Lovely tree.
I had one but dropped it maybe 15 years ago as I changed the garden around. It was behind my garage and even now all these years later the stump is exactly as it was the day I cut it down Weird as most stumps go in 5 years max. Darn thing is like iron. I think its fossilized.
