Cross your fingers - UK to US flight corridor

In the Sun today:

A travel corridor allowing free travel between America and the UK should be in place by mid-May, according to Virgin Atlantic CEO Shai Weiss.

"There is a great opportunity here to focus on the corridor between the US and the UK,” he said. “The US has a hugely successful vaccination program.

"Within the UK government’s traffic light framework, we have the opportunity to put the UK and US on a ‘green’ basis and get the economy moving again as of May 17."

Travel industry leaders across the UK agree.

John Holland-Kaye, CEO of London Heathrow told Business Traveller that there should be no obstacle between the US and UK: “Even if the US was on the green list from the middle of May, in addition to vaccination, there would also be pre-departure testing for anyone who was travelling and that is a good belt and braces approach taken at this initial stage.”

He added that the US has a hugely successful vaccination programme almost rivalling the UK’s.

“We have seen over a 107 million citizens vaccinated there, and they are due to vaccinate 75 percent of their population by May,” he said. US President Biden announced earlier this week that all adults will be eligible for their first vaccine jab from April 19.

It’s over a year since Brits have been able to enter the US. With a very few exceptions UK citizens have been barred from entering the States since March 2020.

However most transatlantic airlines are now saying they plan to resume long-haul flights from next month.

Crossing everything! Sky News reported the traffic light system is happening but too early to say where is “Green”. US is a good example of a “Green” route surely!

It feels like we just need Joe Biden to announce a relaxation of the ban on travel to and from the UK soon and we could be on for May onwards! Oh I do so hope it happens (keeping absolutely everything crossed!)

It’s going to be a nail biting few weeks/months for those of us with summer bookings! I wouldn’t be surprised if the US is initially ‘amber’ then moved to green as their vaccination programme gathers speed and hopefully cases fall. Sounds like the system will be reviews again in June and July according to Grant Schapos in sky. Just need Joe to let us in!

Back to last summers weekly rush home to the UK after the Thursday announcements of which countries now require quarantine.

You would have thought they'd come up with a more secure plan after that fiasco. You'll be worried your entire holiday of changes coming in.

I think that’s the point of the new green watchlist. From what was said on BBC 4 interview with the head of the Department for Transport, it takes “weeks” to do genomic sequencing on potential variants so there would be plenty of warning. Ie: don’t jet off on a holiday to a country that’s already on the green watchlist. But you should be relatively safe when you’re there should it move from green to the watchlist.

We are due to go on 28th June but if my daughter hasnt had 2 jabs plus 2 weeks waiting time afterwards then even if we could go, we probably won't be able to. Plus the extra costs of all the tests for 3 of us . I really hope she gets the single dose vaccine and they scrap the tests ,then I will be waiting at the airport will my bag packed

The watchlist is helpful but comes with the same caveat as last summer which then essentially turned the initial non weekly reviews into weekly ones.

''While the watchlist will warn travellers of potential changes in advance, the Government will not hesitate to act immediately should the data show that countries risk ratings have changed''
