London underground help

I've booked a 3 day trip to London, got a good deal on train tickets and hotel. However its been over 15 years since I've been and I have no clue how to pay for the underground.
Do you need to pay in advance for a ticket for the underground? Or can you buy it whilst your there? Do you pay per ride or are there zone passes?
I'm going in October, if that makes any difference.

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

If you just use your debit/credit card and tap it at the turnstiles. It will cap it at a day rate for you like using a Oyster Card. We did it this way last weekend and after a full day of using the tube it cost us £7.20 each.

Just remember to tap out as well as in, or otherwise it'll charge you as if you went to the furthest zone out.

Yes contactless bank cards are better because you don’t have to buy an Oyster card and top it up. I have always been charged the same amount as I would have spent on an oyster. It’s important to look for the tap in/out points as mentioned above. Also masks are still regulation on public transport.

Yes we’ve just been to London and contactless card is so simple. I would just point out though that you need a different card for each person.
