Enjoy - it is lovely and has a feel of an old English seaside town that is still loved and filled with locals. Its easy for me to get to on the fast train from St Pancras xx

I was in Whitstable last month and it was lovely. I was visiting some of the places I used to go as a kid. Also went to Margate but was a bit dissapointed as a lot of stuff seem to be permenantly closed. Maybe it is a bit more lively on a day when Dreamland is open

Margate is not nice, i ad a lot of money spent on it which has made it feel like "London on sea" which is great if that is what you want but not for us, though when quiet the tidal filled lido is good.
Whitstable is quite pretty but the sea is still estuary and you can only swim at low tide, also the paths in the town are very narrow, feels like its made for londoners and can feel pretentious. It is also home to the worlds smallest castle that has an excellent playground for small kids and the food is not bad. I like Herne Bay particularly if you are with the family again Estuary not Channel , people look down on Herne Bay but its good fun the pier is worth 20 minutes and the amusements are fun. It does get looked down on by many from Whitstable. You can easily do Whitstable and Herne Bay in a day despite what some Whitstable residents may think they are only 10 minutes apart. Minnis bay is nice for the beach. Broadstairs beach is nice if its not too busy as is Ramsgate (though the town not so much). You do again tend to get too many loud londoners here though. Both have sandy beaches as they are just on the tip of the channel, parking in Broadstairs is hard ! Broadstairs has an awesome little cinema and a great ice cream shop. Ramsgate town is not so nice. A trip to Hythe town and then the beach along from Sangate is good fun long beach and big waves as its channel not estuary. Edited at 12:28 PM. |

Broadstairs is lovely and we quite like Dymchurch too though not sure if dogs are allowed . Could always go on the little dymchurch railway to dungeness - that is quite remote and stoney though!

Whitstable also gets the thumbs up from me. I do agree with a previous poster, that in places the paths are very narrow.
From Whitstable you can walk 10 minutes along the front to Tankerton. This path is very wide and is great for strolling along. Keeping on this path will take you all the way to the edge of Herne Bay (up to the Hampton Inn). When we walk from Tankerton to the Hampton Inn, it usually takes about 45-60 minutes. From the Hampton Inn it goes to a standard sized path which takes you to the main seafront at Herne Bay. If you want to really tire your dog out, you can walk to Reculver Towers from Herne Bay, which is a 3.5 mile walk. If you don't fancy that far a walk, you can stay at Tankerton and use the chip shop there - it does really nice food. We live in Chatham, and sometimes we drive to Tankerton for the chips! The great part of it is, that from Whitstable, all away along the coast you are walking next to the sea, so the views are lovely.
