On the accommodation tour I went on earlier this week at Leicester you get to make 6 choices, so if you want en suite for example you make sure all your choices are en suite and the same would be for price too. I guess you just have to make sure what you put down is affordable to you.
Nottingham was an eye watering £266 per week 😩 |

My Son is hoping to do Economics and Business Management at Heriot Watt, Edinburgh or Strathclyde, Glasgow but intending to stay at home and commute. He is looking at the courses offered and options available for studying rather than the accomodation side so slightly different situation to most mentioned so far on this thread.
He has been encouraged to apply to Edinburgh, has the high grades required but not sure if it is the best fit for him. It has a reputation even nowadays for being quite elite and that kids from a "normal background" are still looked down upon by snooty kids from private schools and abroad. I know quite a few kids who dropped out and a few who persevered and ended up with a good Degree but did not really enjoy the 4 years. Edited at 09:17 PM. |

At Nottingham Trent she logged in and booked her exact room so she knew what she was getting and what it cost.
Saying that, she waited 24 hours and some of the blocks had already sold out so she had to go slightly more expensive than originally planned. |

I didn’t know about that reputation, thats rather worrying. If it is just for the elite then she probably won’t get in anyway.
She loves history, tradition and old buildings etc the course, English, sounded brilliant too. We did note that Scottish universities are 4 years rather than Englands 3 years. Why is this? |

It is really just a personal opinion based on kids I know as I was born and brought up in Edinburgh and now stay about 20 minutes drive away. They actively encourage bright kids from "deprived" areas to apply and have special programmes to help them with applications to show they are not elitist.
From what my son says the first year is a broader curriculum and then you specialise from the second year but if you have the relevant Advanced Highers/A Levels/College Course you can sometimes skip the first year. |
