The easiest way to test an alternator is by using a voltmeter/multimeter on the Battery.

there are some instructions here

The alternator charges the battery (you probably knew that), and usually there is a warning light on the dash to indicate it's not charging (but not always).

You can test it by buying a cheap voltmeter from amazon (£10) and there are lots of vids on youtube. I take it you haven't got an at home breakdown cover or they would confirm it in no time.

The following is the symptons of a faulty alternator, and it sounds as it could well be that:

Dont worry, petrol is amazingly cheap at the moment, unfortunately we filled both cars before lockdown, you know in case we needed to go somewhere! X

Thanks, we have got AA, not sure if home start I’ll check but would they put in new alternator or we’d have to get to a garage 🤔

I haven't done one for years and it was straightforward with just a few bolts and a belt, but the AA/RAC only allow a certain amount of time to fix a car, and I guess the issue is them sourcing a replacement alternator locally which might be more difficult than normal. I would guess that the AA probably wouldn't do it. If you do have the at home service, it's still worth getting them out to confirm it's definitely the alternator that's faulty, and if they don't do it there are lots of mobile mechanics that can do it, so you can get quotes from them.

I would be cautious about buying from halfrauds as their parts can be really expensive. I just googled them and an alternator for my runaround car was close to £500!

I would check online sites that sell alternators. Halfrauds was a lucas one which is good quality, but silly money.
