Thanks everyone for your kind wishes.
Neighbour knocked on the door to let me know that he's survived the night (which he probably wouldn't have done if he hadn't been to the vets). They think it's a problem with his heart which was causing the fluid and the breathing difficulties. Hopefully it is something they can sort out for him - fingers crossed x
