Interesting thread.

I was going to get my DD a new laptop for life and uni. Her current one is old but functional but poss not for long.

She has an iPhone and an iPad and will mainly use this for lectures, notes, essays etc. Watching Netflix and socialising. Not for processing fancy stuff.
She is unlikely to want to do more than plug it in.

She wants a Mac so it will link to her iPad / iPhone.

I think it will be a bit of a waste.

To be honest while I appreciate all the useful and informed comments above the vast majority is over my head. Not a Scooby about any of these acronyms or actually doing anything techy.

At the moment I try and encourage her to store any work on Google drive but I think it's on the laptop. She doesn't want to use g drive. Not sure why but I suspect because it is a new or unknown thing.

So folks, what is your advice in words of one or two syllables in this situation? Both in specifics of what to get - and in how to sell it to her ! Is there a basic Mac that will do the trick?

OP sorry for hijacking!

I’d advise getting to grips with google drive. Extremely useful. Especially if she is away at uni. She can share a doc with you if she wants advise or proofreading.

She can get to work from any device. It won’t get lost if a hard drive fails. It’s my go to place to store everything.

Which device to buy? How much cash do you want to spend?

£700 will buy a very nice windows machine.

£1000 will buy an entry level MacBook.

Macs are pretty and I like working on them but they are never cheap.

Problem is, my existing one works perfectly for everything I do. Never needs rebuilt. Just works flawlessly.
That's me.

I paid just under £800 6 years ago for my macbook air.

It seems such a change not to be looking for an upgrade every 18 months to 2 years.

I think I would try a chrome book next - in fact am dying to - but my mac is as good as new. A case of want not need!

So has cost me £133 per year so far...

I do use a high spec laptop for work (WFH) - so I am reminded of the frustrations of updates, slow start up and shut downs, watching it get slower over the months, so I can't imagine ever owning a windows pc again... if I won one, I would sell it and but a chrome book or put towards a mac.

thats unfortunate... my mid 2011 mac mini is still going strong... i replaced it as my main desktop machine two years ago when i got the new 2018 mac mini, but it is still in use as my gf's occasional desktop

i'm hoping i get at least another 5 years life out of my new one (which is 2 years old this month)

i also have a 2014 macbook pro, which is still in perfect condition - it's my main DJing laptop, so apart from this year (where ive had no gigs since march) was getting used for ~6 hours a day 3-4 times a week since i bought it

true, apple are phasing out the intel chips in favour of their own, so all of them will become obsolete at some point... but i would think we will get another 5 years of useful life out of them before OS updates mean we can no longer install modern web browsers and apps... its not like the intel kit is going away anytime soon.

plus, if all else fails, we'll be able to run windows on them with bootcamp if macos suddenly dumps us

Good post-it’s worth noting though things have just changed in that the entry level MacBook (or Mini) (the new M1) will be substantially more powerful than a £700 Windows machine now due to the new M1 chip.
These things have been matching Apple Pro machines in processing power. I was watching one guy on YouTube benchmarking his base level MacBook Air yesterday and it was exceeding last years’ top end MacBook Pro with twice the memory costing 3x the amount and in some instances matching his $14000 Mac Pro. That is just astonishing.
It’s hard to stress what a game changer these 5nm M1 chips are- probably the single biggest leap in computing power in 10 years.
Yesterday I was editing my 4k60fps 10 bit video in Final Cut. It’s all on my external SSD drive and I was able to view it as I was editing it in original quality and it was instantly applying transitions, overlays, luts etc. I know this won’t mean much to most people but my HP Elitebook (new £1300 work laptop) couldn’t even begin to work like this.
The game just changed in laptops the development is so big. If you have Intel shares- sell.
They will be bringing out some real power versions of these processors next which will blow absolutely everything else away.

I think some of the experts on this thread may be blowing the original needs right out into space! If the OP’s daughter is doing a GCSE in 4K editing and CAD design then fair enough, but otherwise, whether PC or MAC, the debate seems To have gone far beyond the need.

FWIW I’m self-employed and do work that just requires Office, web-use etc. I do a bit of photoshop on the side for fun. Previous PC lasted me 10 years (admittedly quite high end when new), current one is 3 years with no sign of slowing. I think the point of them lasting max 2 years is more relevant when working in a large corporation where your employer is making updates every week.

I’m not saying PC is better (I’m actually curious about a move to MAC just to see what it’s like and may start a separate thread for any tips on what to prepare for if I make the transition) but I’m not sure how important it is for most people to have the absolute latest chip etc!

Especially not for GCSEs.
Even at Uni, my daughter doesn’t need hers, she just wanted it.
Her money I guess 🤷

Point is power for the future. We are talking power per £. Remember even the most mundane of apps often significantly increase their power consumption as does media. 5 years ago no phone shot 4k60fps- now all iPhones do. No phones shot RAW photos. Now they do. Soon 8k will be everywhere- most laptops won’t play it.
Remember OPs original question wasn’t shall I get PC or Mac. It was which Mac is the best for her daughter.
That question is answered simply- base MacBook Air but make sure it’s the new M1 chip version.
My point isn’t to spend more money than necessary- it’s buy the cheapest which is also incredibly powerful now.

YorkshireT is quite right about the question that was asked-and probably the answer too. The new machines look impressive, most impressive! I just wish my 2012 Mac would slow down a bit so I could justify a new one!

I think as was mentioned a lot depends on what you’ve bought into. The seamless nature of Mac/ipad/iPhone is nice!

The M1 isnt yet available on the 16" MBP. Rumours seem to suggest next month or next summer.
When these become available as refurbs., that might be the time I upgrade. However, every time I have set a target like this, I bail out from spending my cash.
