2020 Uni students how much to budget?

Just wondering how much to budget for my DD starting Uni in September, her accommodation will be covered by her maintenance loan (not a great deal left) so food etc will be paid by “bank of mam and dad”. She will probably find a part time job and we will provide her room, kitchen etc essentials. What are your thoughts? Xxxx

I'm just looking at this too, after paying her accommodation she's got approx £750 left so I'm wondering how much top up she'll need.

Where is your daughter going? Abby is heading to Bangor.

My ds2 is going back for y3. I reckoned on £150 ikea trip for duvet, mattress topper, starter sets etc.
Then he has £100 /month from me. The rest is his debt / job as his loan covers accommodation. I have ds3 going on gap year so needs similar and I cannot afford more on a regular basis. Both will have a big bulk aldi shop on arrival, so both will have crates of pasta etc to store under their beds!

which/money/univer...et-calculator/

Which have spoken to loads of existing students to find out what their actual budgets are.

For Cardiff it seems that £844 per month is the average figure with £337 of that being accomodation.

The budget we have for our DD (including maintenance loan) is £15,000 for the year.

We will leave it up to her how she actually budgets that

I have always given mine £50 per week, transferred on a Monday so they don’t spend all on the weekend 😉

Their loans have never covered their accommodation costs so I also make up the shortfall of that which this year for DS is an eye watering £900 per term (3 payments per year)

Last year for me now, thank goodness! It has been an expensive 5 years with one year overlapping with both kids at the same uni at the same time! If I was rich I would have been better off buying a flat lol

Course paid for by loan, but money left £4,289. His accommodation costs are £5,758 per year, so I’m budgeting around £800 per Month, plus I pay his mobile phone costs his X-ray lean and insurance etc. He will need to look for a part time job as well and I will put £ 1,000 in an emergency account away from his current student account

Our daughters maintenance loan covered her accommodation fully (Including utilities) but left nothing left. We paid for her mobile phone, which was £30 a month, she had a part time job that paid £100 a week and this was way more than she needed and in fact she saved money.

I just asked her and she told me she spent about £25 on food for her flat for the week but also spent £5 for lunches mon to frid at uni. She then spent about £25 on other stuff like cinema, odd drinkies etc, which left about £25 saved each week. So looks like to have a decent amount I would say about £75 per week. This is best if they can work themselves as it not only gives them money but they learn some very valuable life lessons.

Edit: Just remembered we gave her a lock box with £150 incase of emergency at the start to her course. She still had it at the end of her third year (last year)
