Any feedback on Detroit airport?
Hi DIBBers, looking at flights changing in Detroit, has anyone had experience of immigration times there plus how far between arrival and departure gates?
Thanks

Was quite a while ago we got changed to Detroit as our plane was delayed going out. Was very tired but from what I remember the airport was pretty quiet and immigration didn’t take long at all. I also don’t remember going far for the connecting flight, there was a monorail type system that goes from one end of the airport to the other but we didn’t have to use it

I found it simple to negotiate, but didn’t like the 4.5 hour delay on my flight to Orlando.

We done this route November 2016, originally stopover was 1.40 but ended up 70 mins, still had plenty of time, not sure I would chance under 2 hours height of season. Would definitely go this route again if the price was right.

Changed there on our last visit. Not a huge amount of international flights so immigration wasn’t bad at all.
Terminal is long and thin and had a monorail between gates so never to far from anything. This is from my trip report… We land into Detroit on time, and it is just our plane at immigration, Detroit have the self service screens so the lines move pretty fast. We still had in our bags our sandwiches we brought as a meal deal so to be on the safe side we declare this and the officers questioned what was in them, as it was chicken they were confiscated. Our bags were ready and waiting for us, as we had been able to check in all the way to Orlando, it was a simple process of heading through customs, popping them onto the transfer belt and heading through security again. From landing to being back in the terminal took us around 45 mins, not bad! Detroit’s terminal is long and thin so can take a while to walk anywhere, they have a cool monorail that will take you from one end to the other. We have a mooch around the shops, and have our first American meal of the holiday, Popeyes chicken, 20 boneless wings and a drink for $15 fills a nice hole while we wait for the flight to board.

We did this transfer about 10 years ago so I don’t remember much, except for the monorail and some excellent blackened fish tacos we had in a restaurant at the terminal!

We had an 8 hour delay there once! It’s a lovely airport
There’s a little indoor monorail that takes you from one end to the other of the terminal. There’s a nice fountain, really clean and spacious, lots of travelators to ride, quite a few shops and restaurants. There’s also a very cool light tunnel linking the two terminals - you need to check that out. I hope it’s still there. |

We've been through Detroit a couple of times, not usually too much waiting around and staff are great. One year we had 3 international flights all land at the same time which customs was not equipped to deal with and we missed our connecting flight as did several other families who came in on same flight as us, but they were good about getting us on another flight as quick as possible.

We did Detroit on our last visit outbound, we were the only plane in immigration so that was very quick, very seamless in picking up your luggage and taking it through to the baggage drop point for the onwards flight to MCO.
We went on the little monorail to our next gate which was all very easy to find and had a wonder around some shops before getting on the flight. Absolutely loved arriving in MCO and not having the long immigration lines. Would definitely consider using Detroit again. |
