Buying a camera for holiday - worth it?
Off to Canada soonish and in all the trip reports etc. the views are amazing. I've not owned a proper camera for years and I'm wondering if it would be worth buying one just for this trip?
I usually just use my phone for photos I wouldn't want to spend more than a couple hundred quid though! Is it worth getting one or should I stick to my phone? TIA

I ditched the camera we had about 4 years ago and just use my phone
However our Son is off to NY next week and he has bought a Sony camera from John Lewis for circa £200. He popped around this week to show me and I was blown away by how good the images were and especially the zoom function. What amazed me was he took a picture of the burglar alarm box on a house in the next street and I could read the telephone number on it as clear as day. So my view is for not a huge amount of money then yes go for it. The pain though is having to lug it around. Edit. Found it. johnlewis/sony-cyber...-case/p3244731

His Partner has refused to carry it. Good girl.

I’m a big fan of photography and the quality you get from a good camera is awesome but such a hassle to carry. If you will be taking out a small backpack or bag then yes do it.

Another who always loves my camera, take most of my pictures on my phone these days, cant be bothered with uploading them onto laptop etc.
However, I went to get a lovely family photo enlarged last week from my phone to an 8 x 10 and the quality was very poor. |

what pone do you have at the moment? if its a top end one (google pixel, samsung s9, etc) then you are probably just as well off using that unless you are doing stuff where zoom is useful (like a safari)
you need to weigh up three things... size, price and optical zoom level a decent big optical zoom means a more bulky device, which in turn can lower the chances of you taking it out with you. if you already have an older digital camera, consider that before buying a new one. whats wrong with it? if its just because its old, you probably dont need a new one. megapixel count isnt important unless you plan on printing them out to something bigger than a4 size. for 6x4" prints and uploading to facebook, anything over 10 megapixels should be ok. what do you anticipate taking photos of? depending on the list, youll need different options. for me, low light without a flash is a major thing... but for a lot of people, a small tripod would fix a lot of those sort of issues... personally, i rarely take out my camera now i have a decent phone camera (google pixel 2) - i only take it if im going somewhere ill need zoom, or low light without a flash... |
