The Hunt for the Best Texas BBQ - day 10 - Austin to home

Day 10

Another good sleep, we were going to miss this bed!

We got coffee and packed. We’d paid in advance for extra baggage knowing we would be shopping! Our cases weighed 22kg for two of them and 16kg for the other.

We ate the leftover pizza for breakfast and needed to get fuel to return the car full.

I thought there was fuel at the H.E.B so we went for a final look, as we had some space, we got a couple more sauces and another roll of foil (oh my word the foil is amazing! ). Had to take lots of photos of our last trip!

The ribs!

We filled up with fuel, which wasn’t at H.E.B but there was one around the corner. Then popped to Bath & Body for a couple of last minute things.

We had a final game of cornhole, which Lee won again.

I decided we had time for one more BBQ stop! We checked out about 11:30, I had a shock as we hadn’t paid for this hotel. I thought I’d paid everything in advance!

We drove to Franklins BBQ

this is rated one of the best in Austin. It was about a 20 minute drive and we got the last space in the car park. We queued for about an hour, again they had a stash of chairs for people to borrow,

There was some filming going on and they were interviewing people in the queue, I don’t know who they were but people were getting photos with them, so they must be well known in the US.

There was a girl going down the queue asking people what they wanted to order, not to take orders but to give people further down the queue an idea of what would be left when they got to the front. She wasn’t sure if there would be ribs left for us. She also tried to tell us we weren’t ordering enough for two. We told her we knew what we were doing!

We ordered brisket, ribs and sausage with sides of potato salad and coleslaw. The brisket was so good! We went to Texas thinking brisket would not be our favourite, and left thinking it was the best!

I also tried a Big Red which is the national soda of Texas.

From Franklins it was only a 14 minute drive to the Airport. We dropped the car off easily and got to the terminal about 2:30pm, the gate wasn’t open yet. I got an email receipt from Budget which appeared to be charging me for something. I’d prepaid it all, so shouldn’t have been charged. Turns out they’d charged for the bigger car, even though it was the only one available! They did refund it.

When the check in opened we checked in, there was no queue and security wasn’t too bad. We had a look round the shops, it was bigger than we realised.
We had a final Lone Star (well apart from those we hadn’t drank which were coming home with us!).

Sad going home faces!

I asked about upgrading to Premium but it was £439 per person. No thank you.

We boarded the plane and again didn’t have anyone sat next to us. Shortly after take off we saw this, which I thought was a carting track, but realised after watching the US Grand Prix recently it was the Circuit of the Americas.

The food was ok, I had pasta and Lee had chicken and mash.

I tried to force myself to sleep as I was driving home, I didn’t do too badly. Breakfast was a cheese croissant. Lee was not impressed with all the cheese and is going to say he has a cheese allergy next time!

We landed at a cloudy Heathrow, the flight was good, cabin crew all really friendly, we had a good experience of our first flight with BA.

We were through everything pretty quickly and on the road stopping for a Starbucks on the way to keep awake.

And that was it. Our hunt for the best Texas BBQ…
So our verdict is Snows, it was iconic. The other two were also really good, but Snows lived up to everything we hoped for, and the playing of the National Anthem just did it for us.
We had such an amazing trip. Texas was an amazing state, The people for so friendly and welcoming, the food was amazing, we stayed in lovely places. We are sad that there are things we didn’t get chance to do. Partly trying to fit everything in. We didn’t get to see live music, we didn’t see as much of Austin as we’d like. We feel like we have unfinished business, especially in Austin. I’m so happy that Lee loved his first trip to the states. Here’s to many more.

Thank you for reading.

What a fantastic holiday Emma! Texas is such a huge place I’m sure it’s impossible to do everything but that just means you’ll have to go back
We are hoping to do a similar trip to you in a few years so I’ve jotted down all the places you’ve mentioned, thank you for taking the time to post
