I’ve been lucky enough to go to Hawaii a few times in my younger days. I’ve always gone via London to SFO or LAX then Hawaiian airlines onwards to the island of my choice. Very occasionally I’ve o/n at SFO and once stopped off at LA on the way back (but I didn’t enjoy that too much - it wasn’t Hawaii and I just wanted to get home at that point). A lot will depend on what islands you want to visit - I liked the Big Island, parts of Maui and Kauai the best.

I’ve booked for next summer, but we are in LA for 4 nights. Out with American Airlines, booked for free with my Avios (£16 taxes for 4). Apparently it’s one of the best use of Avios monetary wise.
Flying back to San Francisco with Alaska. It’s about $1000 each way for 4 or $250 each. Bags are not included, they are $30 each on check in no matter what airline I think- standard stuff for US internal flights.

We were tempted, very tempted but after experiencing the horrors of being 12 hours time different in Australia we simply don't fancy the length of flights. Even with a few days in between the time zones are simply horrendous and doing jet lag twice in a row both ways just fills us with horror.

The only way I'll do it is with a cruise from Vancouver to Hawaii but then you lose 8 days of holiday floating around the ocean. Good luck if you want to do it. Would be good to hear how people cope with the jet lag. Especially going home.

I don’t really get Jet Lag now with melatonin- it’s a life saver for me as I used to suffer really badly. We have three days in San Fran coming back, so shouldn’t be as bad as coming straight back.

We were booked for Hawaii in 2020 for our 40th wedding anniversary and DH 70th birthday. I still want to go but unsure whether DH’s health is up to it. Will see how things go.

I would like to do Hawaii too - the length of flights/jet lag is a concern so would need to break up that journey. Need to look at different ways

There are loads of really good alternatives that would turn it into a multi centre and thus break the back of the jet lag.

I quite like this idea of San Diego, what is Hawaii like in March/April?

These are your direct options…

Plenty of choices amongst that lot!

I was in Oahu this April. You can view it and form your own opinion in my trip report. We flew in from Vancouver and home through Seattle.
