Virgin open ticket not allowed to upgrade

We originally booked economy light after me having the bright idea of travelling light and having a budget trip of 12 days in April 20.
I kept our tickets as open ones but now want to rebook for October 21 as economy or PE if the price was right.
When I've contacted Virgin by WhatsApp i was told I can only book like for like with open tickets!
I replied I'd have to ask for a refund in that case and rebook and the rep on the WhatsApp chat has just ended the conversation now.
Surely they could rebook us and then upgrade at whatever the cost is?

I was definitely told it acted like a credit and we could rebook whatever, class, destination and date we liked, just pay the difference.

I think it's because it's an economy light ticket. You can't upgrade them if I recall correctly.

We managed to upgrade our open ticket and pay the difference when we rebooked. As I wanted to upgrade I did phone rather than use whatsapp and they were very helpful.

I think a phone call is in order. Want a longer trip now so economy light won't cut it. Seems daft as the only difference is adding on luggage and being able to pre select seats

I would of thought once it goes into an open ticket it will become a voucher to the value of what you paid, I would definitely speak to someone else as virgin staff can be very different from one to the other,

You should be able to. I downgraded today from premium to economy from April to october. She did have to put me on hold and go to a different person to give access to changing cabin classes.

I was told like for like too. I didn't want to upgrade or downgrade. PE to PE. But the price was lower as different time of year, so wanted the cheaper price and refund of the difference. As if I was buying as a new booking, the lower price is what I'd be paying. They said it's like to like related to the class of the seat (known by letters apparently). Disputed it, in hold while spoke to manager, manager didn't pick up so she did it anyway and refunded difference. Their rules are very strange and disparate.

We phoned today and booked our open ticket to next September, we upgraded from economy delight to premium both ways and it only cost us an extra £200 what a bargain. Mind you it took over an hour on hold to get through to them.

They said I couldn't do that guy said he'd check but came back and said sorry not allowed, I did say I didn't want refund just downgrade as it would help them out,. But no had to have refund, and I have now booked with BA virgins loss.
