Book everything on a credit card and make sure the medical cover on the Insurance is ok. Minimum of $1 million preferably $2 or $3 million.

That’s what we have done since the 1990’s.

Also go via Quidco for Cashback!

We always do DIY wherever we travel when possible.

You need end supplier failure. Always have done. Probably more important now than ever.

Mine last year didn't have pandemic cover - who knew? Covered disruption for volcanoes though 🙄

You don't *need* end supplier failure, but it's useful to have. If you put it all on a credit card that will cover you for most cases.

You don't really need anything special when booking DIY, but if your not getting a package of sorts then you don't have the ABTA protection.

We don't go without at least £5M cover.

My insurance is through the roof over 1500.00! I do have a pre existing condition which has never made much difference so no idea what has happened this year.

Speaking here wearing my insurance hat:-

1) For travel to the US you should aim for at least £5m medical expenses cover

2) On general principals you should check whether you have decent COVID cover (not just actually falling ill prior to departure but also e.g. being asymptomatic but returning a positive pre-departure test so not being able to fly, or being required to quarantine due to being a close contact of someone who returns a positive test at either end of your trip, and cover for the costs of an extended stay at your destination due to falling ill with COVID or being a close contact (self-quarantine required) of someone who returns a positive test - not just any medical/treatment costs but also extended accommodation, food etc). Not all policies include these so check very carefully before you buy and if it’s ambiguous (sadly still sometimes the case) on the website get something in writing before you commit.

3) End supplier failure (and especially of airlines) is a sensible thing to have as well although there is some legal protection if you’ve paid at least £100 of the cost by credit card. There are however substantial holes in this ‘Section 75’ (of the Consumer Credit Act) cover, particularly if a third party such as a travel agent stands between you and say an airline and/or hotel, so proper insurance is better.

As of the latest government changes there is no pre departure test so that isn’t an issue. I also don’t think there are any requirement for “close contact” isolation in the US, and if you are double vaxed here you don’t need to self isolate either.

Agree that this is the case as of today - but we’ve seen how fast governments can change the rules. How many people made a made dash home from Spain when it went from ‘green’ to ‘amber’ and people would have had to self-isolate for 10 days upon return? There’s nothing to say that any of the rules just dropped can’t be reinstated with only a few days notice…

A word to the wise folks, DW took a nose dive into the pavement in 2019 when we were out on AMI. The subsequent ambulance trip, A&E assessment, 24 hours in hospital with numerous bloods and scans = £37K.
