Talk to me about layover flights
Looking at the moment like the only way we are gonna get there next summer is by flying into Tampa via a 2hr layover in Atlanta.
Always done direct so all new to us. Is 2hrs enough? Is it a fairly straight forward process? What’s Atlanta immigration like? Queues/no queues? Anyone ever lost all their luggage when getting a connection flight? |

Atlanta can be frantic. I would suggest that 2 hours may be marginal, but if the airline say it’s ok, then I would go with it. If you miss your flight, then provided it isn’t too late a one, like the last of the day.. I would expect you to be put on a later one.
I would contact the airline before buying and ask if they can give a similar deal on a 3 hour layover. The system is very simple and after picking up baggage, it is through customs and with a conveyor belt to put the baggage on, on the other side. If you need to change terminals, then there is an underground train running a loop.

Layovers can actually work out quicker from your door to your hotel door.
That 2-3 hour layover during which you clear customs enables you to walk directly to baggage reclaim from a medium sized aircraft (which is quicker). You don’t have the sometimes horrendous waits that can occur when the longhauls arrive in Orlando. Going home, it is generally a short, 1 hour layover and it is simply gate to gate. You do not even see your bags. In our case, our indirects have been from LHR, which, arriving the evening before from the West Country during rush hour, is an hour and a half quicker than LGW. If travelling from London to Orlando return, then I would actually take indirect with a 3 hour layover going out and a 1 hour going home from LHR in preference to directs from LGW… even if the prices were identical. I also prefer Tampa to Orlando. If going via Atlanta, then I would also research an arrival at Daytona Beach. That is an even nicer arrival and may be cheaper (or not)… or an Orlando arrival as the prices should not be much different. What are your departure point and dates? Hope this helps reassure you. Another question, we usually aim to get to mco about 3hrs before a direct flight home. Obviously we’d be flying internally first if we stopped via Atlanta. How long before do you need to be at the airport to check in?

An hour is generally plenty. You simply go from gate to gate.
I tend to arrive at least 2 hrs early for any flight. I am sensibly cautious. Do you want to give me dates, numbers adults children etc and I will see if I can beat your price? Edited at 07:07 PM. |

Ah thanks!
I have to fly with Virgin because I made the silly mistake of changing my flights to open ticket instead of waiting for them to be cancelled. I know! Don’t go there! Anyway, if you have spare time, we are looking at: Flying out: 26th July (no earlier but could go a day later) Returning 11th or 12th or 13th August. Flying from Manchester. Only really want 1 stop max. 2 adults, 2 kids (11 & 9). Thank you! |
