Day 2 Part 2 - The Mandalay Bay

The Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas

As you turn off the strip into the hotel valet area, the short road is called “The Road to Mandalay.” It took me from 5pm until 2am for my brain to remember the name of the song that comes from... Answer at the end of this report!

The Mandalay Bay is a very Chinese influenced hotel in both appearance, interior decor, room design and the bulk of the restaurants. The actual layout of the hotel is almost identical to The Mirage, in it is a Y shaped building with a central elevator hub.

Check-in was quick and smooth, didn’t blag an upgrade to the room but then we had one of the best suites anyway, due to a convention canceling and the hotel doing a “One Week Only” promotion at silly prices to fill the rooms at the last minute.

The room is fantastic, on the 27th floor, which is good news considering it is the 2nd furthest room from the lifts! They have recently been refurbished and good choices have been made in furniture and surfaces.

Like the hotel, it is very oriental in style with a huge 10ft mirror with ornate carvings around it, lantern looking lamps that hang from poles, a very strange two backed sofa that lets you sit looking at each other on it. I will post some pictures later, once I buy a blinking USB lead for the camera

Mel is loving the bed, as it has one of those pillow top covers that is like sleeping on two duvets. 5m of floor to ceiling windows are behind it, and we can see the MGM Grand and the airport. A 46” Plasma is at the foot of the bed.

The bathroom has a huge spa bath, separate toilet and shower cubicles and a HDTV between the two sinks!

In one corner is a desk with a window behind it which was freaky at first, but I have been sitting on the floor trying to get my head used to this kind of sensation. Who knows, I may go up the Empire State yet. (Unlikely Mel, don’t get your hopes up.)

Here is a rubbish picture from my laptop camera of the view behind the desk.

All in all not bad for £200 for three nights.

Lady luck is already smiling at us, and my $20 became $64 on my SECOND SPIN! I was down to $50 shortly afterwards, so I quickly cashed out and got some food with the proceeds. We do love the “Super Jackpot Party” machines!

The Noodle Bar produced some of the finished Singapore Noodles I have tasted to date, and you can get them to go back to your room with.

Too wiped out to consider one of the beers I had grabbed earlier, I munched and was in bed within 20 minutes. 6pm local time, though, so it is now 2am and I am wide awake.

Darn.

So anyway, here is the answer...

The head of the herd was calling
Far, far away
They met one night in the silver light
On the road to Mandalay
So Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk...

Footnote

Don't ask people for directions, they always get them wrong. Last trip we were taken to a closed Walmart, this time we were sent to a Target THAT DIDNT SELL BEER!

Once we gave up on the advice Dollar had given us, we found a great supermarket (Andertons I think it was) that had everything our heart desired, and some things we didn't know we desired until we got to it.

Mountain Dew based Energy Drinks anyone? Yummy.

Glad you are having a nice time - don't think it was built when I went in 1991 and 1992 - I stayed at Bally's twice, which is sort of opposite The Mirage. The Mandalay looks nice and so does THE hotel behind it.

I thought you meant the Robbie Williams song... 'Road to Mandalay'
It goes something like this...

'Save me from drowning in the sea,
Meet me out on a beach
Oh what a funny holiday
There's nothing more for me to say...

Bom, Bom, Bom, bom, Bom, Bom, Bom, Bom... ' Gosh I am mad, sorry!

Play those slots!

Hahaha... I wonder why the "Road to Mandalay" is a popular thing then? I must look into that later.

Unbelieveable - a supermarket that doesn't sell beer - you must have been gutted.
