Use by dates - must stick to or just a heads up

Who sticks to Use by dates on food and who treats them as a gentle warning

In our house, if Mrs Wazza gets there first it’s gets thrown out as soon as the use by date expires.

But I just look at it as a gentle reminder to perhaps give it a bit of a sniff before you eat.

Causes many a forceful discussion

Depends on what it is.

Use by dates on prawns - stick to
Use by dates on whiskey - ignored

We stick rigidly, I'm really fussy and often won't use on the last day either 🤢

Edit to add: agree with PP. Alcohol is fair game 😂

My Nan had a cold room, and a keen nose.

Dates are a waste of ink.

Same with me and my husband! He even thinks that anything past its “best before” date should be ditched!

I think it depends on what it is, I would never use raw chicken after it's use by date, I even try to use it a couple of days before. But with bacon and ham I will use them a day or 2 after the use by date, just give it a sniff.

A few weeks ago I found an unopened jar of coffee at the back of the cupboard, it's sell by date was Oct 2017, I decided to open it and try it, and it tasted perfectly fine to us. We only got to use it for few days though, as I dropped it and broke the jar.

Ok, I have this with Mrs Wazza. By her logic if something, let’s say bacon, runs out on 15th I could use it to make a sarnie up to midnight on the 15th. But I couldn’t use that same packet of bacon for breakfast at 5:00 the following morning. Does it really become inedible in those few hours😄😄
And as for Best Before dates, we’ll they’re just open ended😄😄

Oh dear, it's a "scientific fact"* that for each year consumed coffee is beyond its use by date, it puts back your desire to next visit Orlando by twice the amount.

So you now can't return for 6 years! You brought this on yourself!
