google the lyrics...
I think that's a personal dig, apparently it was changed for live performances to Queenie which was acceptable, allegedly.

which is what i meant with the OP ie/ the context

anyway will always divide opinion & always interesting to hear peoples views
I think maybe because ‘ A Fairy Time in New York’ - is set in New York where the word is far from meaning that and the context has been changed as to “not offend” and all the lyrics are New York based eg NYPD etc - believe me as a gay man it is not used to mean useless/bum at all- maybe if the song title was a Fairy Tale in Belfast/Dublin it wont not had caused so much upset but it wasnt and it has

It is great to see a lot of straight allies supporting the change of one word that really all it takes to make such a difference. Even it is saves just one child/person for being beaten up because of that connotation then surely that effort is worth it ?

I said that and as it's aimed at her either current or ex lover that makes more sense. However it isn't worth the upset really is it?

Were many of you around when the Beeb banned "Lola" by The Kinks in 1970?

Anyone know why? If 95% of you (as I did ) said the obvious subject matter you'd be wrong. It was banned as it mentioned cherry cola which was considered advertising.

So rest assured that the Beeb has been the guardian of our morals for half a century.

I may be wrong but didn't they also ban "Relax" by FGTH?

Mick

I'm Irish living in Ireland. I don't know Kirsty or Shane personally. In the context of the song, I think it means lazy or waste of space. Which fits in with the rest of the song

There are a few posts here that seem to imply those of us who have said we support the change in lyric are ‘snowflakes’ or are easily upset.
I can only speak for myself but I assure you I am pretty robust and I don’t get easily offended. This is about a word that is associated with homophobic abuse, with hate, a word that has caused great pain to people. I don’t see it as particularly ‘woke’ to think it’s time to retire that word from a song that is so ubiquitous at this time of year.

And yes, I sing along to the original version of “don’t marry her “ and “baby it’s cold outside”.
