It's overplayed anyway. It's not even a Christmas song, it's a song about addiction, abuse, and hatred, it just happens to be set on Christmas Eve... albeit in a police cell

Ah good post . Although I love the song and happy to listen whenever it’s on. In fact just asked Alexa to play it, great. It’s also a bit like Heaven 17 great Christmas song even though it’s not one.

You are neither stupid or naive, it’s just in some quarters of our society it’s now the norm to “seek out” offence ... the vast majority then have to conform or we are then branded with various “... ist” insults! All very sad.

One of my favourite songs of the 70’s - the killing of Georgie by Rod Stewart has the lyric “and all the Old Queens blew a fuse”... totally relevant to the song but I’m surprised that hasn’t been retrospectively amended ... where will it end ?

I feel equally surprised that the fabulous l’l’l’l’lola by the Kinks hasn’t been ‘reworked’ / ‘censored’ / destroyed.

A walk on the wild side with Lou Reed? (Great bass line from Herbie Flowers).

I agree that the Pogues from a response to Lawrence Fox on Twitter are clearly absolutely happy with the change.

However on songs banned by the BBC I have to give a shout out to Jasper Carrot who got to number 1 I think with Funky Moped because the BBC banned the B side (yes that long ago) which was a rude version of magic roundabout.

I wish the BBC would be more consistent with what they ban...

They ban lyrics of certain songs yet dont bat an eyelid when a 'comedian' utters the term "Kill Whitey" on a TV show...

More consistency and relevance required I think.

even weirder Shane was born & educated in England (pubic school no less... ) he did spend his pre school years i ireland, Tipperary iirc

fun fact only two of the pogues were irish born... london irish is probably the best way to describe them

SussexFamily is missing the point - its not the word its the language and how it is used (or indeed misused)

Anyway the author of the song has made his strong views very known today and seems content with the re-wording . I am just relieved that in the “real world” I am surrounded by compassionate and thoughtful people who, regardless of their personal views, do not go out of their way to offend and i doing so inflict hurt.

Merry Christmas everyone
