Peter Sutcliffe - The Yorkshire Ripper dies

Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe dies bbc/news/uk-england-54874713

For those that remember those awful times in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

It may not be politically correct but good, they should have saved us all the cost of putting him in prison and hung him years ago.

I remember reading Richard Mcann’s (son of Wilma McCann who was murdered by Sutcliffe) autobiography. He was five when his mum was murdered and the knock on affect it had for the rest of his life was harrowing to read.

The affect it has, not only the victims obviously, but on their families too and those that knew them, is very sad.

Richard was on BBC Breakfast this morning. Very articulate and he has moved on with his anger and hate which is probably the best thing to do or it just eats you up.

He explained that in about 2010 he had decided to let go of his anger and "forgive" Sutcliffe.

"I am sorry to hear he has passed away. It's not something I could have said in the past when I was consumed with anger," he said.

It's on BBC News and well worth listening to.

A good news day.

Good news because it may finally give closure to the families of his many victims.

I am a firm believer in the ‘suspended sentence’ for the most serious crimes, but that is a subject for a whole different thread and not the purpose of this one.

Yes, at the end of his book he explains that he has turned his life around and I had read later on that he forgiven him as a part of his own moving on process.

The book though is still very sad to read, Richard’s life after his mum died was so very difficult and it definitely had a profound affect on him for many years. He ended up being raised by his father who was a bully and tyrant and the things he was subjected were appalling.

It’s not easy to come out the other side, I know that much and he’s done well to do so and to live a good life, as he very nearly ended up on some dark paths at points.

It is clear Sutcliffes actions affected many beyond his victims, with a long lasting effect on those left behind. Notorious Individuals like him or others like Huntley will not be missed.
