Literally just thought the same thing.

It can be done without the 'paper prescription' providing your current glasses are good, DH handed his glasses to the optician in Walmart and he took the prescription from his current glasses and a week later DH got nice new glasses.

Although it is possible to do this, I wouldn't recommend it...even if you got your prescription emailed to you, it would be better. There is always a risk that the prescription in your specs is slightly out or the equipment being used to measure your prescription may be needing calibrated.
