Mobile phones

When we go in May I'm thinking about buying a mobile phone (non contract) that I can use over there and bring home to use here. I have a cheap mobile at the moment as we suffer poor coverage especially inside our home. Last year, following an emergency I bought an LG K8V phone from Walmart with a Verizon call package but on returning home apparently it can't be altered for use over here as it's Verizon linked so is totally wasted and the call package has expired so no use this year. Should I go for an 'unlocked' phone or can anyone recommend a cheapish model that can be used over here afterwards (thinking around $60 - $100). Alternatively is it a stupid idea? I'm non 'techie' so any advice would be appreciated.

I've just changed to an EE SIM only deal where I can use my package in usa, think it's called EE4GMAX plan. Unlimited calls & texts, 12gb data for £16.69/ month.

Three also have a plan that you can use in usa.

Maybe give EE or three a look?

Thanks Mary, I'm with EE at the moment. My current phone cost me £6.99 so as you can imagine it's not all 'bells and whistles' and I was looking at the opportunity of having a mobile connection whilst on holiday (after last year's problems) and replacing it with something a little better that I can use in the UK although as we struggle to get 2g within the house I'm not looking at top of the range stuff.

Looking at EE's site I think this is only for roaming in the EU

Finally, for those wanting the ultimate smartphone experience, EE has introduced 4GEE MAX plans, combining the largest data bundles as well as the UK’s fastest 4G speeds, and inclusive access to the BT Sport App for the duration of the plan. What’s more, customers can use their plan’s call, text and data allowance to ‘roam like home’ when abroad in the EU.

There's now extra countries included, see below - copied & pasted from EE website

Our 4GEE Max plans give you the fastest 4G speeds available in the UK, and include roaming to over 50 destinations, including the EU, Australia, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and USA

I always get 3's PAYG sim and top it up with £20. Stick that in my phone and convert that £20 into feel at home credit. Use that then when im in the states as you get data and calls etc s u would at home!
