Are you aware how far it is to Key West - look at Google Maps - about 160 miles from the Miami airport area. The US-1 through the Keys is quite slow - 40mph - with 1 lane in each direction. I have done it in a day from the Homestead area, but it is a very long day and you only get about 4 hours there.
Sights in Miami itself include the Island Queen boat trip round the Bay from Bayside Marketplace, the South Beach area, Metromover, plus the Everglades National Park.

If you're short on time I'd recommend Miami Tour Company to see all the main areas in Miami, they pick you up at hotels or designated points. We saw lots of Miami that we wouldn't have seen otherwise.

We have flown into Miami and stayed 2 nights before driving up to Orlando. In reality it’s only one day to explore Miami. We used a hop on/ off sightseeing bus. There was so much more we would’ve liked to see but the heat slowed us down. The beach is lovely. We plan to go back as we would like get to the Little Havana area/ eat crab at Joes stone crab restaurant and see the Venetian pool. Miami Beach has a cool vibe, we loved it.

South Beach and Ocean Drive area are a real experience, as you see them in so many films, music videos and adverts. We liked Wynwood Walls, the Holocaust Memorial, Botanical gardens-all free and don’t take long st all to walk round. Big Pink is a nice American diner but make sure you’re really hungry when you got there!
