Camera for Video and Photos

Hi lovely dibbers,

We are off to florida again in October.
On our last trip we took an action cam and our DLSR camera.

We want to be able to take more video this time and have more control than you do with an action cam. Our plan is to turn the videos into some vlogs for us to watch as a family.

We will still take the action cam for water rides and the water parks etc. But we obviously need an alternative for videoing our days.
And we want to be able to take photos too.

I love my DLSR, and got great photos last time, but ideally i don't want to be carrying three separate cameras, so i am looking for a decent compact that can do video and photos.
We have two young children, so the less we have to carry the better.

The Canon G7X mii keeps coming up on internet searches. But does anyone have any experience of it?
Or any others that would be good?

My daughter wants to film videos for youtube so we would look to use the camera for that as well once we return.

Any advice or recommendations would be great.

Thanks so much

Emma

I bought a Cannon IXUS180 for my last trip, Both the pics and the video including zoom were excellent

I would thoroughly recommend this bad boy

Sound was crisp too

The G7X mk2 is the camera of choice for a lot of Youtubers, we use one too. Have to say I've been overyjoyed with the footage from our 2017 trip. The quality has been great and the low light performance is considerably better than our last camera. (Panasonic TZ60)

Main drawbacks would be short zoom (24-100mm apparently) and no viewfinder so you are reliant on the screen.

Hi,
Thanks, its good to hear from someone with the G7X. I thought the flip screen was a good feature to have.
Was it the G7X you used on your 2016 trip? Or was that the panasonic?

The no viewfinder does worry me slightly, only that when it is sunny i can't really see the screen on my phone very well at all, so relying on a screen to take photos doesn't seem the best idea. But maybe i'm overthinking it.
How did you find it in florida?

I used the Lumix TZ60 and a GoPro Hero 3 on the 2016 trip. There are some 2017 trip videos on our channel which were almost entirely shot on the G7X.

The flip screen was useful for framing video while talking to the camera.

I didn't take a whole lot of photographs on the g7x this year in Florida so I didn't really miss the viewfinder. We still carry my old eos600d for photos for the most part.
