I don�t think I bothered with the coffee? It won�t matter if you leave it out. All purpose is plain, yes.
There are better chocolate cake recipes but this seems to hold the cheesecake filling quite well.

I�m sure it is used as Miss Fortune says. It�s in most GF chocolate cakes that are made with almonds so maybe it�s for a bit of bitterness?

One other thing, I used piping bags or I�d have got in a right mess! I�m sure it can be done without though
