Is it because they will only renew within a set time period - 6 months?

That's what I thought too and I'm pretty certain it said that on the website. Looks like a trip to the Post Office for me.

Thanks everyone for your ideas.

2. Renew

If your passport’s expired, you must renew it before you can travel.

You can renew your passport at any time. When you renew your passport, time left on your existing passport is added to your new one, up to a maximum of 9 months.

If your passport will expire soon you might need to renew it before travelling. Check the entry requirements of the countries you’re visiting before booking travel.

The above is from passport website

In addition to the ago e you can also renew your passport if it has previously expired. My sons first passport expired when he was a out 6 and I have just renewed it in prep for his trip to the USA - he is now 13. It took a while to get around to it !

I used 1st class signed for which said delivery aim of next working day. I posted another letter at the same time and that has been delivered. Hopefully I am just being impatient, I get really stressed about things like this... just want the new passport so I can get Esta sorted... it's no wonder I'm grey!

Don't worry - mine didn't arrive next day either - I did get loads of emails and texts during the process. I sent mine on 6th February and received a text on 9th February advising they had received it! It was delivered on 14th, so a really quick process.
