Thank you everyone for your kind words. I can honestly say yesterday was one of my hardest ever days.
Daisy and Willow are okay I think. My husband said Daisy was looking for snuggles when I was out at work, so he had her on his lap. She and Merlin have been together all their lives, except when he had his radiotherapy in France (when she was very sad), so she will need lots of fuss. Willow didn’t have the same bond but she adored him too. I know Covid has decimated many people’s lives, and I am so sorry for them, but for us it has given us the chance to work from home and for at least one of us to be with Merlin round the clock in his final weeks. It also gives us chance to hopefully allow the girls the time and love they need to cope with their loss and adjust to our new normal. We have asked for him to be cremated and returned in a scatter tube. I can’t bear the thought of keeping him in a casket indoors or burying him at a house we’re hoping to sell. My Grandad has a field which is one of his favourite places. We’ve not been there for awhile as he went missing there once, but he loved disappearing into the undergrowth chasing smells. We will probably wait for a day when the wind is blowing towards the undergrowth and set him free. Hopefully Covid restrictions will in due course relax enough for my parents and brother to come too, albeit socially distant, as he was very much a family treasure. Edited at 04:57 AM. |

Kate , I’m so very sorry to read this , it’s the worst pain , we lost our Lola in January to lymphoma, she had a very rare aggressive form and was only given 5/6 weeks from diagnosis without treatment , like you we threw everything at it and got nine months with our beautiful girl but not nearly long enough ! We had very similar experiences with our vets , really felt that they didn’t care very much and no rush to communicate with us other than to overcharge us , we pushed for oncology referral and even then the amount of times we were asked where were we at with our insurance limit left me realing with anger , it really felt like that was all that mattered to them and between vet fees and holistic treatment we spent in excess of £12000 , but I have to say and I’m sure you will feel the same way I’d pay it all again just to get her back , my heart goes out to you , give your two pups the biggest hugs and cry when you need to 💗 💗💗

I’ll be honest that any annoyance or bad feeling with our vets is long gone. The specialists were clear it was unlikely to have changed the outcome, and their care and compassion, to us as well as Merlin, in the 2 years since he was diagnosed has been second to none.
I think we went about £7000 over our insurance, and as you say we’d pay it all again. I can’t recall being pressured about money or whether we had insurance, and what we paid our regular vets didn’t shift between us having insurance and not, but it did with the specialist.
