Healthy dinners after having braces fitted
Just after some ideas please. DD16 had braces fitted yesterday. As a family we try to eat as healthy as possible and I try to cook from scratch when I can. The slight issue I have is when I'm cooking sauces using garlic, ginger, etc, I find it difficult to get them to a paste like consistency as I have rheumatoid arthritis so there is often tiny bits of uncrushed ingredients in the sauces. This obviously isn't ideal and certainly not for dd. I prefer to use fresh ingredients so wonder does anyone know of any kitchen gadgets that might help with this? Also, as per my original query any recommendations for healthy dinners for the next couple of weeks whilst DD gets used to her braces.
Many thanks. |

I cheat and use garlic salt, chilli powder and ground ginger - as it's dried it lasts longer than fresh and no chunks (and quicker too).

Lazy garlic is quite useful, (or garlic paste)
Barry Lewis has some great gadget testing videos on YouTube, but I haven’t tried many - something like the garlic rocket he tested might help?

She will adjust and eat normally pretty quickly, so don't worry too much, the only things I couldn't eat, were toffees/gum etc.
As long as she is religious about the cleaning after eating, she will (Tipi brushes etc) she will be fine. Worth it in the end!

I have a little roller thing, that crushes garlic, called a Garlic Zoom I think , its fairly easy to use.
Healthy recipe I love is salmon, marinated with few chilli flakes, bit of garlic powder, then some honey, and soy sauce drizzled, and just cook for 15 mins served with either sweet potato mash, or uncle bens Chinese rice and Broccoli.

I would use garlic paste instead. My son had braces a bout 2 years ago. He found it very difficult eating and biting into things like sandwiches for the first few weeks. Rice also bothered him throughout.
Pasta with tomato sauce or a pasta bake Smooth Soups (butternut squash; potato & leek; broccoli) Omelette Oven baked cod with potatoes Salmon with potatoes or mash or potato dauphinois Chunky fish soup (cod, salmon, potaties, carrots) Fish pie

When I first had my "tramlines" fitted, my teeth were so sore I struggled to chew, so I had lots of yoghurt, soup and pasta!
I agree with others about making life easy - I use lazy garlic, lazy chillis and ginger in a tube. If I need to grind spices, I have an electric spice mill. Life is too short!

I usually shove lumpy sauces through the nutribullet for a fussy DS(12), works a treat and makes it very smooth. I usually do this also if I am making a roux as it tends to be lumpy, blitz it after adding milk then back in the pan, no complaints here.
DS(16) had braces for 9 months and I again used the nutribullet to make soups smooth for him in the first few weeks, that's all he ate for lunch, warmed it in morning and took it in a thermos and he drank it at school. Also loved fruit smoothies too. He did always swill his mouth with lots of water after meals. |
