I was thinking back over the last 30 years and it’s happened to us about a dozen times - the ‘held’ flight has always arrived at their destination pretty much on time. The most recent was in January when flying Man - Doha - Cape Town. The Doha - CT flight was held 30 mins for us and other connecting flights but we still arrived in CT 10 mins early.

Not the best end to your holiday. I hope you get home safely & recover from the delay quickly.

I think it is more that the airline are making a sensible decision to ensure they aren't leaving passengers behind for the sake of 40 minutes. From a cost view they would have to re route them, possibly find a hotel as there may not be another flight that day or possibly for a few days.

Now somewhere like Heathrow missing a take off slot causes lots of problems and may have had a different outcome.

Moat flights have leeway for small delays or weather issues so they can fly a little faster or if lucky get a tail wind.

So if you were about to miss your connection you would be happy to stay and wait for the next flight even if it was 3 days later?

I'm just glad that the OP managed to get assistance from Delta and managed to get home earlier than expected.
Can't abide this bickering regarding rights or wrongs of holding back a flight. I'm sure that if we were in the same position as OP we would want to catch our original connection.
Gone are the good old days when BA used to hold up the shuttle from Heathrow to Edinburgh when our flight from Plymouth was delayed. Mind you that was in the 80's.

Thanks everyone we are finally home. We got home just after 5pm as we live close to the airport. We arrived at T3 but our car was T2 meet and greet so we had to walk over (called last night and advised them). However none of our luggage arrived in Manchester. Pretty rubbish ending to the holiday if I’m honest. I need Things in my case but according to the app they are all still in Atlanta, coming over on DL30 to Heathrow then a flight up to Manchester tomorrow morning and coming by courier. Not sure what’s going to happen as out the house tomorrow. The saga continues 😫😫

Poor you, I bet you are all exhausted. Thankfully home safe now and will feel better after a good night’s sleep I’m sure. I do hope they get your luggage to you safely tomorrow. Our son arrived in the UK without his luggage a few years ago and it was delivered to his hotel the next day with no problems.

Not having your luggage is a nightmare but they will get it back to you. DH and I had cases go missing on a flight home from Cyprus. They had taken an extra holiday to Crete! We live in the Midlands but flew from Heathrow. Our cases were couriered home within 2 days.
A rotten end to your holiday. I do feel for you.
