I have just given up working as a classroom assistant/lunchtime assistant after 15 years and wholeheartedly agree with this. We were hourly paid for only 39 weeks a year but spread evenly over the full year. This rate meant we were under the NMW, however the advertised salary wasn't, you just had to read the small print! We were expected to speak with our the teacher after our hours finished, sometimes supervise kids at breaktime which was unpaid and if we went on day trips and could claim an extra couple of hours we used to be docked for the the lunchtime work we missed If staff went on residentials, pay stopped for classroom assistants at 3 when school would have finished despite them probably doing another 7 hours of supervision - no wonder there were problems getting people to go away for a week! We were told we were professionals like the teachers but weren't paid accordingly. Having said that, I loved the job and do miss it!
