one way car hire

We've got a tentative plan to do New York for a few days and then pick up a car and do a road trip down to Orlando.
The prices are astronomical! £2k for the end of June.
Going the other way is £530 for the same class of car.

Has anyone got any ideas why it's so expensive going south one way?

Are there any locations between NY and Orlando that don't charge a one-way fee? you could then split your booking into multiple vehicles (even offer at keep the vehicle you have at the hire-place but under a different booking reference).

Firstly are you sure there is a 1 way drop fee in your 2nd quote as that sounds really cheap to me.
Normally the drop fee tends to be in small print and not very obvious.

I had a quick look with Virgin for an Int SUV 27th June from NY drop 10th July in WDW and it's £682 - however there is a $300 drop fee.

What are your dates?
