Hi

I know a few people have sold on here and I know I have read about the US tax issue but can anyone tell me first hand what route they went down to not pay it or reclaim it?

I haven’t done it but have read plenty of stories of those who have. You can do it yourself but it’s quite difficult. It costs about $500 for an agent to do it. It’s a reclaim. Most seem to have one suggested by their resale agent but there are one or two in the UK who can do it as well, a fella in London I saw someone once used.

As a non US seller the tax is withheld at the point of sale so you don't have the option of not paying it. Your resale broker will recommend a tax specialist in the US who can complete the paperwork for you and once that has been filed and approved they authorize the broker to release the tax back to you less the tax agents fee.

A few of us have used Nancy Carpenter, if you speak to her she will give you a rough idea of the amount of tax you can expect back. If it's a small contract it might not be worth it once you pay her fees but you'll be told roughly how much before you give her the go ahead. Also you pay per contract so if you were selling 2 or 3 smaller contracts it again might not be worth it.
