Wonder on the West Coast: Day 9 - Cabo San Lucas

Index

Tuesday 29th October 2019

We woke up at 8am this morning in Mexico — Cabo San Lucas to be exact. As well as being back on dry land we were also back online via 4G; so after getting coffee and milk from deck 9 (no room service for us this morning) we relaxed in bed and caught up with the world and my notes.

At about 9am we woke Isabella, got ready and popped up to Cabanas for a light and delicious breakfast of fruit and pastries.

Today's plans involved a trip into Cabo San Lucas but as we didn’t have any excursions planned we waited until after 10am when open tender began; before 10am only those who had excursion tickets were allowed on the tender boats.

We made our way to the Buena Vista theatre on deck 5, picked up a tender ticket and then headed to deck 1 to get on the next available boat. As we passed through the theatre we saw that they had Toy Story 4 playing on the screen; no doubt to keep people occupied if/when there is a longer wait for the tender boats.

The whole process only took about 10 minutes, and after a short tender boat trip we were on dry land. It was a really hot day in Cabo and consequently we only spent about half an hour walking around. To be honest there didn’t appear to be much to see — although admittedly due to the heat we didn’t walk very far — and constantly being pestered to go on boat tours/diving trips/jet skis quickly became tiresome.

Having seen (and heard) enough we made our way back to the tender boats and, as we were the last family on board the next available boat, were seated at the front next to the captain. This turned out to be fortuitous — as we made our way out into open water the captain handed over the boat to Isabella to steer us back to the Disney Wonder. It was a really lovely moment and definitely the highlight of our short visit to Cabo — and Isabella absolutely loved it!

It was around 12pm when we got back on board, just in time for the Oceaneer's Club Open House during which they were scheduled to have a ‘Marvel Super Hero Academy’ theme. We’d read that Marvel characters sometimes drop in (even on non-Marvel cruises) and we hoped that would be the case this time.

While we waited we had a good look round: Isabella and I had a go on the Slinky Dog Slide in Andy’s Room; we explored Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post; and had a look at the various displays in the Super Hero Academy.

Disappointingly no characters showed up and the ‘Marvel Super Hero Academy’ theme just turned out to be the chance to play the interactive ‘Marvel Super Hero Academy: Avengers Assemble’ game. Isabella had a go and quite enjoyed it, but she doesn’t play video games (we’re not gamers either) and wasn’t very successful!

The open houses are a good opportunity to see just how great these kids' clubs are – no wonder Isabella loves going in there – definitely worth making some time for.

It was now lunchtime, time for another trip up to Cabanas. As the ship was empty we thought now would be a good opportunity to get some photos in front of the Ariel statue. As we were taking some selfies, one of the crew members from Triton’s offered to take some photos of us. His name was Johnny from Indonesia and I think he did a pretty decent job — thanks Johnny!

Once our impromptu photo shoot was over we made our way to deck 9 and the Cabanas buffet. They had sushi today and it was delicious. We were also surprised to see Steven Seagal sitting a few tables away from us!

We finished off the buffet with some delicious bread and butter pudding and then headed out on deck for a little wander. As I said, the ship wasn’t too busy and as we wandered round on deck Jo and Isabella played basketball in the rather grandly named World Wide of Sports Deck — it’s basically a basketball hoop and a couple of table football tables!

At about 1:30pm we headed back to the room for a half hour chill out before Isabella’s Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique appointment. Being on the Wonder with the ‘Princess and the Frog’ themed restaurant and bar it seemed only fitting that Isabella wear her Princess Tiana dress for her appointment.

Once she was ready we made our way to deck 9 forward and then up the stairs to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique on deck 10; it’s one of only a handful of places that are actually inside on deck 10 as most of that deck is outside – the others being Palo (aft) and the entrance to Vibe (midship).

We checked in and Isabella was introduced to her Fairy Godmother — a lovely lady from Thailand called Miran. The makeover lasted about half an hour and Isabella thoroughly enjoyed it; we love being able to give her a special treat on the cruise!

We left the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and headed down to get a few photos of Isabella in various poses in and around an empty French Quarter Lounge. En route to the room we decided to grab some pizza from deck 9 as we were all feeling peckish.

After our afternoon snack it was now time for Jo and I to have our treat. Isabella went off to the Oceaneer’s Club while Jo and I made our way to the Cadillac Lounge in the Route 66 area on deck 3 for some tequila and margarita tasting.

Just like the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique this tasting had been booked before getting onboard. We signed in and chose a table that was already set up with some drinks and other bits we would need for the hour long session.

The Cadillac Lounge is the equivalent to the Magic’s ‘Keys’ piano bar, but in my opinion the theming is better – the highlight being an authentic-looking Cadillac El Dorado grill that sits behind the dashboard bar. Apparently this was designed by Walt Disney Imagineering in conjunction with General Motors and features working headlights: impressive!

The host for our tequila and margarita tasting session was the Nur from Indonesia, the Head BarTender of the Cadillac Lounge. He was very good, if a little intense, and the tasting was a lot of fun; at one point a couple of guests had large shots of tequila poured down their throats, ‘dentist chair’ style!

After three tequilas and four margaritas we were both feeling a little merry as we left. We really enjoyed it and, in addition to the drinks, we also learnt lots about the history and making of tequila and margaritas.

After a few days on board the Disney Wonder, surprisingly we came to the conclusion that we preferred it to the Magic: as I said we thought the Cadillac Lounge was better than Keys; the English pub, Tiana’s Place and French Quarter Lounge are all superior to their Magic equivalents; and we found the crew all over the ship to be friendlier than on the Magic. We’d definitely love to cruise on the Wonder again.

We collected Isabella from the club and went back to our stateroom to get ready for our dinner in Triton’s. The sun was setting and the ship was beginning to leave Cabo San Luca behind so we spent a few minutes on the balcony (sans wine today – for obvious reasons!) and managed to get some lovely photos of the sunset.

Once we were ready we headed down to Triton’s for dinner. Our table mates didn’t arrive tonight – I think they had planned an action packed day in Cabo full of swimming and dolphins and the like – so we dined alone.

The Triton’s menu is very similar, if not the same, as Lumiere’s on the Magic so we knew what to expect and what our favourites were:

Me: Escargot Gratinee – Herb-marinated Snails with Finely Chopped Mushrooms, topped with Garlic Butter / French Onion Soup – with Gruyere Cheese Crouton / Roasted Rack of Lamb – with Dauphinoise Potatoes, Buttered Brussel Sprouts and a Burgundy Rosemary Sauce / Grand Marnier Soufflé – served with Grand Marnier Crème Anglaise

Jo: Iced Lobster Jumbo Shrimp – with Green Asparagus, Horseradish Cream and Dill Dressing / French Onion Soup – with Gruyere Cheese Crouton / Chateaubriand-Roasted Filet Steak - Roasted FIlet Steak, Crushed New Potatoes with Shallots, Buttered Green Beans, Red WIne Jus, and a Béarnaise Sauce on the Side / Grand Marnier Soufflé – served with Grand Marnier Crème Anglaise

Isabella: Breaded and Deep Fried Brie - with an Orange and Cranberry Chutney / Mac and Cheese

After dinner Jo and I decided to have some fruit tea to go with our dessert. Noticing that Isabella was dressed as Tiana, Pradita (the assistant server) made her an origami frog.

As we left Triton’s after a lovely dinner, we saw that Minnie Mouse was meeting – dressed in a tutti frutti hat which I assume is a tribute to Carmen Miranda – so we headed up to deck 4 and got a few photos with her.

Back down in the lobby on deck 3 there were other photograph opportunities and, as we have the photo package, we decided to get some more family photographs. The photographer made us take off our shoes and had us do some really odd poses – the ones of Jo and I look really awkward and consequently didn’t make it into the trip report!

While Jo and I were posing, another photographer had Isabella doing her own photo shoot - those photos were also a little odd but we’ve shared a couple here - all of this resulted in a few laughs when we checked them out in Shutters a little while later!

Isabella decided she’d like to spend an hour or so in the Oceaneer’s Club so we dropped her off and then we went for a stroll around the ship. There was an announcement that someone on board had been taken ill and we would be heading back to Cabo for them to receive medical attention.

“So true funny as it seems”

Having had more than enough alcohol for the day we decided to pop for a coffee in the Cove Cafe in the adults only area on deck 9. On every cruise we talk about going in there for a coffee as they do all different types (latte, cappuccino, etc.) that you can’t get from the self service coffee machines, but for some reason we never do it. This seemed like the perfect opportunity and we finally made it in there, paid for a decaf latte each (they’re not free like the self service coffees) and sat down in the surprisingly empty cafe. It was a nice way to relax and unwind for half an hour at the end of another fun Disney Cruise Line day.

Once we’d finished our coffee we went and picked Isabella up and headed back to the room. It didn’t take us long to get showered and into bed, and by 9:30pm we were saying goodnight.

So that’s day 9 done – tomorrow is a day at sea and also Pirate Night, so expect lots more fun and fireworks!

Isabella looked like she had a fun day - how lucky to be able to steer you back to the ship and them have a makeover.

Did you or Jo have a go in the dentist chair!?

Been looking forward to another day. Lovely photos as always. I'm intrigued to see the ones that didn't make it though! Haha.

Looked like a lovely way to end the day.

She loved steering that boat, they were probably only after the extra tip but it was a lot of fun for her!

No we stayed away from that dentist chair, we’d had enough as it was!

It really was a fun day. There are always some bad photos - mostly due to Isabella’s inability to smile with her eyes! 😄 Thanks for reading 😊
