Airmiles safer exchanged for flights?

This is what we're thinking of doing, we've enough for 2 x UC flights within the same distance of MCO, tempted to change them for whatever we can get in reward flights which would be around £1200 in tax in the hope that we can pay the amendment fee to change them to something we'd want, or worst case scenario be able to claim on insurance for the lost flights. What I'm not clear on is if we could claim if they went bust because of them being reward flights rather than cash.

I've checked my insurance and airline failure / insolvency up to £2,500 per person is included. I've made the assumption that it would include taxes. I hope so

This is an interesting proposition. We currently have two sets of 4 reward flights booked for August and October. (We moved the Oct flights from May)

We also have 100k points left on account but they’ll be staying there for now.

I was interested to hear that the taxes would (hopefully) be safe if Virgin go down, but I really hope this doesn’t happen as I’ve spent a hell of a lot on our Virgin credit card to afford these reward flights!

There does seem to be a lot of reward flights available at the moment when I checked and changed our NYC flights to Oct. also, Mco had availability too from Manchester. But this was a couple of weeks ago now.

A bit like if you have paid VAT on an item and the buisness goes bust it's hard to get the VAT back.

I can't prove it. But in the scenario of VA going bust, I would expect administrators to be appointed, that they oversee getting the money back from HMRC and protect and return it as client monies.

Ok, that's interesting, I hope that is what would happen. Did the people following TC collapse who didn't have insurance get their taxes returned or did ABTA pay them out instead?

As APD is only due on departure of the flight, would HMRC even have the money if your flight is yet to depart?

Totally different scenario.

HMRC are brutal. I cannot see HMRC reimbursing to an administrator taxes paid and then have the administrator distributing HMRC money to, say, corporate creditors. It is not plausible to me. But as I say, I cannot prove it as I have never worked for a company that has gone bankrupt.
